Greer Relief: Rebuilding Lives in the Wake of Hurricane Helene
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, our community faced devastation on an unimaginable scale. Families were displaced, homes were damaged or destroyed, and the everyday lives of thousands were disrupted. Yet amid the destruction, the unwavering spirit of resilience and unity shone through. Greer Relief was proud to stand at the forefront of these efforts, working tirelessly to bring hope and stability to those impacted.

In the hurricane’s immediate aftermath, Greer Relief mobilized quickly to meet urgent needs. Within the first six days, we provided disaster food assistance to 944 neighbors. Recognizing the varying needs of families based on whether they had power, we tailored the food assistance to be both practical and impactful. As the recovery phase unfolded, we transitioned to pantry recovery efforts, assisting an additional 650 individuals with essential food, hygiene products, and household supplies.
We understood that stable housing was key to recovery. To this end, Greer Relief provided $46,081.97 in financial assistance, helping 90 neighbors avoid eviction and maintain their homes. Additionally, 33 neighbors received utility assistance, ensuring they could retain access to critical services like electricity and water—essentials that allow families to focus on rebuilding their lives.
We also allocated funding for disaster home repairs, enabling families to restore safe and livable conditions. While this funding remains underutilized due to the large number of renters impacted, we are actively exploring partnerships and outreach strategies to maximize its use and broaden its reach within the community.

For many, navigating the complexities of FEMA and DSNAP applications was a daunting but essential part of recovery. Greer Relief provided crucial support, helping neighbors understand and access these federal relief programs. Our team ensured that families were not alone in their pursuit of assistance, guiding them through every step of the process.
These efforts were made possible through the rapid mobilization of staff and volunteers, as well as strong partnerships with local organizations and government agencies. By offering needs-based assistance—not income-based—we ensured equitable access to resources, regardless of financial status.
Our new home at the Indigo Hope Neighborhood Impact Center served as a hub for relief and recovery efforts. It became a beacon of hope, where neighbors could find the support they needed and where information about available resources was widely communicated.
As we reflect on the challenges of Hurricane Helene, we are inspired by the resilience of our neighbors and the generosity of those who stepped forward to help. While the journey to full recovery continues, the progress we’ve made together is undeniable. Family by family, home by home, we are rebuilding lives and renewing hope.
Together, we will emerge stronger.
