Alex and Violet came in to Greer Relief for assistance on their rent. Alex had to have a hip
replacement in 2006. He was doing fine with it until last year. Alex ended up going to the
doctor about the problems he was having with the same hip in November last year. They
found that a part of it was defective. He was scheduled for the next available surgery they had
to replace the hip again. The surgery was set for February. He worked up until his scheduled
surgery and tried to save whatever they could during that couple of months so that they
would have a little bit to help them during his recovery period. The doctor’s haven’t given him
a time frame of when he will be able to return to work but he is hoping to be back by July.
When Alex was working he was able to get a lot of overtime and also got extra shift pay. Since
he is now on STD he isn’t getting those extras and he is only getting a percentage of his base
pay. Violet does work but only a part time job. With only his STD and her part time pay they
are struggling to make it through until he is able to return to work. They have cut back all the
extras and are only down to the necessities with their expenses. I referred them to
AccessHealth to help with any medical care that isn’t covered by his insurance. And I referred
Violet to SC Works and Job Connection to help look for a second part time job or a full time
job. Greer Relief was able to help them with part of their rent to stop them from eviction
thanks to a grant that was given to use for those in need due to a medical crisis.
