Through United Way of the Piedmont’s AmeriCorps Program, AmeriCorps members serve as Financial Stability Navigators at local organizations in the Piedmont region of South Carolina to address critical community needs related to economic opportunity. Members directly serve low-income households by providing care coordination and financial literacy services, preparing and filing income tax returns for free, and assisting households to apply for state and federal benefits.
Program At A Glance:
- Serve part-time (900 hours in a year) at Greer Relief OR another local nonprofit, government, or community organization
- Directly serve economically disadvantaged clients in order to alleviate poverty in Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union counties of SC
- Develop a wide range of professional and leadership skills
- Establish a network of nonprofit professionals and community leaders
- Collaborate with other National Service members on volunteer projects
Member Benefits:
- Modest living allowance of $6,000
- Eli Segal Education Award to be used toward student loans or further education ($2,887.50 upon successful completion of service)
- Monthly shopping at United Way of the Piedmont’s Gifts in Kind Center for household items, such as paper products and cleaning supplies

- Professional development training and workshops
- AmeriCorps members are often eligible to apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (food stamps) and other assistance programs
