Dear Friends,
Greer Relief has been serving neighbors in need since 1936 with a safety net of emergency assistance to support those in need within the communities of Greer, Taylors, Duncan, Lyman and Wellford. Prevention is the core of our mission, “To serve the community by preventing hunger and homelessness in the Greater Greer area.” The combination of hunger prevention, homelessness prevention, and one-stop access to human service agencies all within one facility, the J. Verne Smith Human Resource Center, has provided our community with a unique network of collaborators ready to answer needs and offer services to better the community.
The threat of family crisis prevents many of our neighbors from focusing on the bigger picture of life: getting or retaining a job, furthering their education, or nurturing their children. They have more immediate needs that affect their ability to make the next step. Once the crisis is answered, we take the opportunity to connect them to needed resources like Greer Relief’s RENEW program.
RENEW, Reaching Every Neighbor Every Way, is an education and life skills program critical to improving the life and health of our neighbors. It includes a network of community supporters who produce and execute classes and training on many topics including nutrition, food preparation, personal health, job seeking tools, financial stability, and healthy living. Hosting educational and life skill programs and engaging them in the process will create a network of success to set them on a path of healthy living.
Greer Relief has received a grant from United Way of the Piedmont for an AmeriCorps VISTA member to focus on grounding the RENEW program. We welcome YOU to volunteer for any of our programs including facilitating a RENEW class (budgeting, balancing a checking account, couponing, interviewing, etc), picking up food donations, gleaning food from local farms, or volunteering for any of our events. We need YOUR help to reach every neighbor in every way.
Sincerely in service,
Caroline
